How many miracles have been recognized at Lourdes?
Seventy-one. That is the total officially recognized by the Church since the apparitions at Lourdes in 1858, against many millions of pilgrims over more than a century and a half.
The 71st was announced in December 2024. It concerned John Traynor, a Liverpool veteran of the First World War who had lost the use of his right arm, had seizures, and had partial paralysis of both legs following surgery in 1920. His cure took place at Lourdes on 25 July 1923. It was proclaimed by Archbishop Malcolm McMahon of Liverpool on 8 December 2024, a century after the event and after Traynor's death.
You may see the figure given as 70. The sanctuary's main website has not been updated since the most recent case.
It is worth being precise about who declares what. The shrine's Medical Bureau and its International Medical Committee consider whether a recovery is unexplained in the present state of medical knowledge. That is the only finding the doctors make. The declaration that a cure is a miracle is made separately, by the person's own bishop, which is why the most recent case was proclaimed in Liverpool rather than in France.
