How many people are diagnosed with cancer each year in the US?
In 2025, an estimated 2,041,910 new cases of cancer were expected to be diagnosed in the United States, according to the National Cancer Institute. An estimated 618,120 people were expected to die from the disease that year.
The most common cancers, by estimated new cases in 2025, are breast cancer, prostate cancer, and lung and bronchus cancer, followed by colon and rectum cancer, melanoma of the skin, bladder cancer, and others.
The National Cancer Institute also reports that approximately 38.9% of men and women will be diagnosed with cancer at some point during their lifetimes (based on 2018–2021 data). As of January 2022, there were an estimated 18.1 million cancer survivors in the United States, a number projected to grow to 26 million by 2040.
These numbers describe large groups of people and are usually not directly applicable to any individual. A healthcare team is the best source of information about a specific situation.
