On July 13, 2026, the IRS recognized National Cancer Information Foundation as tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, effective July 7, 2026. National Cancer Information Foundation is classified as a public charity — not a private foundation — under Section 170(b)(1)(A)(vi). EIN 42-3639534.

Governance

National Cancer Information Foundation is governed by a board of directors and maintains internal bylaws, conflict-of-interest policies, and corporate records. We will publish additional governance and financial transparency information as the organization grows and as required filings become available.

Who is accountable

Legal accountability for everything on this site rests with National Cancer Information Foundation (EIN 42-3639534), a Wyoming public benefit nonprofit corporation, and with its board of directors and officers in their corporate capacity. We publish the organization, its EIN, its registered agent address, and its IRS determination letter, but we do not publish the names, personal addresses, or personal contact details of directors, officers, staff, or volunteers on this website. This is a deliberate safety and privacy decision, not an oversight.

Donors, grantmakers, journalists, and regulators who need officer or director names, governing documents, or filings can request them in writing at legal@cancerexplained.org, and we will respond.

Accountability for the content itself

Cancer Explained is patient education, not medical advice, and it does not diagnose, recommend treatment, or replace your care team. Most pages are written from cited primary sources (chiefly the National Cancer Institute) and checked editorially; they are not individually reviewed by a physician, and we never label a page “medically reviewed” unless a named, credentialed reviewer and review date appear on that page.

Funding & editorial independence

Where our money comes from, the firewall that keeps funders away from editorial decisions, which gifts we decline, and our annual funder disclosure commitment are all documented on our editorial independence & funding policy page. Donations of any kind — including gifts made in honor or in memory of someone — follow the same policies.

Donation accountability

Donors may tell us which part of the mission matters most to them. Unless we separately accept a legally restricted gift in writing, donations are treated as unrestricted support for Cancer Explained’s charitable and educational work. This avoids promising restricted accounting that the organization has not formally accepted.
