Claim Check: Did a HEPA Air Purifier Improve Cognitive Function by 12% in a Month?

A viral social post says a month of HEPA air purifier use raised cognitive function 12% in older adults. A real, NIH-indexed study backs the direction of that claim — here's what we could and couldn't confirm.

A post on X (Twitter) from Dr. Rhonda Patrick's @foundmyfitness account claims that using a HEPA air purifier "improved cognitive function by 12%" in middle-aged and older adults, after just one month of use.

We checked this against PubMed, the National Institutes of Health's own index of peer-reviewed research — not our own judgment. This isn't a case where a wide internet search first came up empty. It's the federal database itself, and it does hold a real, matching study.

What the federal record shows

PubMed (PMID 41991562) lists "Effect of HEPA filtration air purifiers on cognitive function from a secondary outcome analysis of a pragmatic randomized crossover trial." It's by Pellegrino, Eliasziw, Fortinsky, Gates, and Brugge, published in Scientific Reports in 2026. This is a real, peer-reviewed, NIH-indexed study, not an internet rumor.

Here's the design, as indexed. Older, healthy adults got either a real HEPA air purifier or a matched sham unit, for one month. Then came a one-month washout period. Then each person switched to the other unit. That's a crossover design, where each person serves as their own comparison. The indexed summary says there was "an improvement in cognitive function" during HEPA use.

What we could not confirm

We couldn't pull the complete abstract text. PubMed's full record kept returning a bot-verification page instead of the article. So we couldn't check the "12%" figure, exact sample size, or statistical confidence on our own. Also, this was labeled a "secondary outcome analysis." That means cognitive function wasn't necessarily the trial's main, planned measure. A study can find a real secondary-outcome signal that still needs confirming in a trial built to test that outcome directly.

Our verdict

Mostly true. The claim traces to a real, NIH-indexed, peer-reviewed study, with a design that matches what's described. This is not a made-up or misattributed statistic. We're not the ones qualified to judge effect sizes or study quality. NIH's own index is the authority here, and it backs the core claim. What keeps this "mostly" rather than fully confirmed: we couldn't check the exact 12% number or sample details ourselves. A secondary-outcome finding is real but still benefits from a repeat study.

Why this matters here

Cancer Explained doesn't normally cover general cognitive-aging research — this study wasn't done in cancer patients. We're covering it because "cognitive function" claims like this one often get shared into caregiver and survivor communities, as if relevant to chemo brain.
