Cancer Explained

Why do test results appear in my patient portal before my doctor calls?

Test results often become available in a patient portal as soon as they're finalized by the lab or imaging department, which can happen before your doctor has had a chance to review them and prepare to discuss them with you. This timing gap is common and doesn't necessarily mean anything about the results themselves.

According to the National Cancer Institute, normal ranges for lab tests vary from person to person, and even day to day for the same person. A number that looks unusual on its own may be entirely ordinary once your doctor puts it in context with your history and other test results. A single test alone typically can't confirm cancer, so results are usually interpreted together with other information.

If you see a result in your portal before hearing from your care team, it's reasonable to wait for that conversation rather than trying to interpret the numbers alone. If the wait feels long, it's also reasonable to reach out and ask when you can expect to discuss it.

Asking upfront when and how you'll get results — and who will explain them — can help set expectations before the test even happens.
