Cancer Explained

Why do cancer caregivers need to care for themselves?

Cancer caregivers need to care for themselves because if you do not take care of yourself, you will not be able to take care of others.

Many caregivers put their own needs and feelings aside to focus on the person with cancer. This is hard to keep up for a long time, and it is not good for your health. Caregiving stress can cause fatigue, sleep problems, headaches, changes in appetite, and mood changes. Caring for your own needs, hopes, and desires gives you the strength to carry on.

Practical steps help. Take at least 15 to 30 minutes a day for yourself, keep up your usual routine where you can, and ask others for help with tasks like cooking, driving, or errands. Talking with people you trust, or joining a support group, is very important to most caregivers.

It is also important to watch for signs of depression or anxiety in yourself. If changes last more than two weeks, talk to your doctor. Seeking help when you need it is part of taking good care of both yourself and your loved one.
