Who should I ask about cancer treatment costs?

Several people can help with questions about cancer treatment costs, and you do not have to choose just one.

The National Cancer Institute encourages telling your doctors if costs could be a burden, because they want to know how costs affect you and can keep your concerns in mind when planning treatment. The hospital billing office or a financial counselor can explain payment options such as payment plans, reduced rates, and patient assistance. A hospital social worker can suggest programs beyond insurance that may help you pay.

If you work, your employer's human resources department may be able to answer questions about your insurance plan. And if you are in a clinical trial, it is worth asking which costs the study covers. Asking early, before care begins, tends to prevent surprises. This is general information, not financial advice, so your own team is the best guide for your situation.
