Cancer Explained

Who can help me with cancer costs?

Several kinds of helpers can ease the money side of cancer care, and you do not have to pick just one.

A financial navigator helps you understand the insurance plans and cost-saving methods you are eligible for. A hospital social worker can suggest organizations and programs beyond insurance. A financial counselor at the hospital can explain payment options such as payment plans, reduced rates, and patient assistance. There are also patient advocates and medical billing advocates who help with bills and insurance for a fee, and who may save you money in the long run.

The National Cancer Institute lists meeting with a financial navigator as one approach being studied to help reduce financial toxicity, the money problems related to the cost of care. A simple first step is to ask your care team or a hospital social worker who is available where you receive care. Asking early usually gives you more options.
