Cancer Explained

When should I talk about cancer costs?

As early as you can. The National Cancer Institute suggests knowing your medical costs from the start of care. Because of the many specialists, tests, and treatments involved in cancer care, understanding what costs to expect early on helps you plan and avoid surprises.

Talking early also gives you more options. If you tell your care team that costs could be a burden, they can keep your concerns in mind and point you to resources. If you ask the billing office about payment plans or assistance before bills pile up, you usually have more choices. And it helps to reach out to creditors, such as your bank or utility company, as soon as you think you might have trouble paying.

There is no wrong time to ask for help, but sooner is generally easier. A hospital social worker or financial counselor can help you start the conversation.
