Cancer Explained

How do I bring up fertility with my cancer doctor?

You can simply tell your team that you want to talk about fertility. According to the National Cancer Institute, your doctor or nurse may raise the topic, but sometimes you need to start the conversation yourself. Being direct helps make sure your questions get answered.

It helps to raise fertility as early as possible, before treatment begins, because the most effective steps to protect fertility usually happen then. A written list of questions makes the conversation easier, and you can bring a partner or trusted person with you.

Questions you might ask before treatment include: Could the recommended treatment affect my fertility? Are there options that might cause fewer fertility problems? Can you refer me to a fertility specialist, such as a reproductive endocrinologist? Who can help me understand insurance and cost?

The National Cancer Institute also notes that research found survivors felt less regret when they had met with a fertility specialist, whether or not they chose to preserve fertility. A social worker or patient navigator on your team can help connect you with fertility resources and support. Your care team can guide you to the right specialists for your situation.
