Cancer Explained

How can I remember what my doctor says at cancer appointments?

It can be hard to remember what your doctor said and what you wanted to ask, so a few simple steps can help you keep track.

Before your visit, make a list of the questions you want to ask. During and after the visit, these tips can help you remember what was said: bring a family member with you when you meet with your doctor, ask for a copy of the information so you can read it after your visit, and record the discussion so you can listen again later.

You can also ask whether your doctor or clinic offers a packet with a question idea sheet and helpful booklets, or a psychologist you can talk to about how you are feeling.

If you would like extra help communicating with your team, ask for a patient navigator. A navigator can guide you through the health care system and help you get the information you need to make decisions about your care. It also helps to tell your team how you prefer to receive information, such as by phone, text, or email.
