Does cancer fatigue go away after treatment ends?
For most people, cancer fatigue usually decreases after treatment ends. But some people may still feel fatigue for months or years, according to the National Cancer Institute.
How and when fatigue improves can depend on the treatment. For example, fatigue from chemotherapy decreases after treatment is finished, but you may not feel back to normal for a month or more. Fatigue from surgery usually improves with time, though it may last longer when surgery is combined with other treatments.
Because fatigue can linger, it helps to keep managing it even after treatment. Exercise (including walking) may help you feel better and have more energy during and after treatment. Good sleep habits, eating well with help from a registered dietitian, and mind–body practices like yoga, tai chi, and qigong may also reduce fatigue.
If your fatigue is not improving over time, or is keeping you from your normal activities, tell your health care team. They can check for causes and help you find ways to manage or cope. Your team can give you a clearer sense of what to expect based on your situation.
