Cancer Explained

Does advanced cancer always mean the cancer is terminal?

No. Advanced cancer does not always mean the cancer is terminal. Advanced cancer is a broadly used term that can mean different things.

Health care providers often use it for cancer that is unlikely to be cured. But some advanced cancers can be controlled for many years with treatment, and in some cases they can be cured. Advanced cancer may also describe cancer that has spread to nearby tissues or to other parts of the body.

Cancers that can no longer be controlled with treatment are the ones often called end-stage or terminal cancer. Because the word "advanced" is used so broadly, it helps to ask your health care team exactly what it means in your situation. You can also decide how much detail you would like to know.
