Does a new symptom mean my cancer has returned?
Not necessarily. Just because you have a new symptom, it does not mean the cancer has come back.
It is normal to have fears about every ache and pain after cancer treatment, but many of these are problems your doctor can easily address. At follow-up visits, it is important to talk openly about any physical or emotional problems and to mention any symptoms, pain, or concerns that are new or that will not go away.
Reporting symptoms lets your doctor decide whether they are related to the cancer, to the treatment you received, or to an unrelated health issue. Some treatments can cause problems that show up months or years later, so your team can tell you which signs to watch for.
Over time, many survivors start to recognize certain feelings in their body as normal. Asking your care team how long certain side effects might last, and keeping a notebook of symptoms, can help ease worry between visits.
