Cancer Explained

Do you have to stay in the hospital for chemotherapy?

Not always. Many people receive chemotherapy without staying overnight in the hospital.

You may receive chemotherapy during a hospital stay, at home, or as an outpatient at a doctor's office, clinic, or hospital. Outpatient means you do not stay overnight. In some cases, a pump attached to a catheter or port can let you receive chemotherapy at home.

No matter where you go, your doctor and nurse will watch for side effects and help you manage them. Where you receive treatment depends on the types and doses of chemotherapy you are getting, how long and how often it is given, and other factors.

Your care team can tell you where your treatments will take place and whether you will need to stay overnight.
