Cancer Explained

Can I travel during cancer treatment?

Often yes, if you feel well enough. The National Cancer Institute encourages people to keep up with their daily routine during treatment — including going on trips — as long as they don't tire themselves out and make time for enough rest.

Whether a specific trip makes sense depends on your treatment schedule, your energy level, and where you're headed. Planning travel around appointments and recovery time, rather than squeezing it in between them, tends to make trips more enjoyable and less stressful. It's also worth keeping up general precautions while traveling, such as washing your hands often, avoiding people who are sick, and paying attention to food safety, since some treatments can affect your ability to fight off infection.

Before you book anything, talk with your care team about the timing of a trip and whether they have any concerns about your destination or how you'll be traveling. Let them know your plans so they can flag anything specific to your treatment that's worth considering.
