Cancer Explained

Can I receive care for advanced cancer at home?

Yes. Care for advanced cancer can be provided at home.

Palliative care, which eases symptoms and improves quality of life, can be given at home under the direction of a licensed health care provider, as well as in the hospital, an outpatient clinic, or a long-term care facility. Hospice care most often takes place at home too, though it can also be provided in inpatient facilities, hospitals, and nursing homes. Hospice can even take place alongside professional home care if necessary.

If being at home matters to you, tell your health care team, because your goals for care help guide where you receive it. It is also wise to check with your insurance company in advance, since many plans cover brief home visits from a nurse or home health aide. Asking early can help prevent payment surprises later.
