Why do some friends and family not help when someone has cancer?
When someone has cancer, many friends and family reach out—but some people may not be able to help, and it isn't always personal. Common reasons include coping with their own problems, lacking time, being afraid of cancer or having had a bad experience with it, believing in keeping their distance, not realizing how hard things are, or feeling awkward because they don't know what to say.
If someone isn't giving the help you need, you can talk to them and explain your needs, or you can let it go. If the relationship is important to you, telling them how you feel can help prevent resentment from building up.
Support is also available from cancer support groups and counselors if you feel you are managing too much alone.
