Cancer Explained

What foods help with nausea during chemotherapy?

When you feel nauseated, foods that are easy on your stomach are often best. These include cold foods like popsicles, pudding, yogurt, and gelatin, and bland starchy foods like toast, rice, plain pasta, crackers, and pretzels. Ginger foods and drinks may also help.

It can help to eat smaller meals more often—try five or six small meals instead of three large ones—and to sip fluids like water, broth, juice, ginger ale, or tea throughout the day. It is best to avoid greasy, fried, sweet, or spicy foods and strong odors if they make you feel sick.

Always check with your doctor before trying supplements or alternative therapies, because some can make cancer treatments work less well. Your care team can tailor these tips to you.
