What do BI-RADS categories mean on a mammogram report?

BI-RADS (Breast Imaging Reporting and Database System) is a standard way for radiologists to report mammogram findings, using categories from 0 to 6, each with a recommended follow-up.

For example, category 1 is negative and category 2 is a benign finding — both mean continue regular screening. Category 0 means more imaging is needed before a category can be assigned. Category 3 is probably benign (a 6-month follow-up). Categories 4 (suspicious) and 5 (highly suggestive of cancer) may require a biopsy, and category 6 is a known, biopsy-proven cancer.

Being called back for more testing is common and usually does not mean cancer. Your results letter will explain any follow-up you need.
