How can I manage memory problems during cancer treatment?
NCI describes several steps you can take to manage minor memory or concentration problems during cancer treatment: plan your day, exercise your body and mind, and get help to remember things.
To plan your day, do things that need the most concentration when you feel best, get plenty of sleep at night, keep any daytime naps to less than an hour, and keep a daily routine. To exercise your body and mind, ask what light physical exercises may help you—exercise can lower stress and help you feel more alert—and try mind–body practices such as meditation or mental exercises such as puzzles or games. To help remember things, keep a list of important information, use a daily planner or electronic device, and keep important names and phone numbers in one place.
It's also important for you or a family member to tell your healthcare team about any memory or thinking changes. Treating conditions such as poor nutrition, anxiety, depression, fatigue, and insomnia may help too, and your team can advise you on ways to manage or treat these problems.
